1) What is the Start My Mummy Business website about?
2 words. Mommy guilt.
We’ve met plenty of working moms who want to spend more time with those kids, or stay-at home- mums who want to do something to bring more money home (don’t get mad, ladies, we know one day the government WILL consider raising those kids an economic activity), which led us to thinking, what is the best situation in between that would make both groups of mothers happy?
The idea for this website came about when I first heard podcasts of mompreneurs running successful online businesses and sounding happier than most mothers. Of course, the first thing that crossed my mind was, “work on her website while her baby naps? HOW LONG DOES HER BABY NAP?? Mine only does 20 minute power naps!?”, but of course the podcaster, does not ask such ‘irrelevant’ questions.
So I launched this website, hoping that it could be a source of information and inspiration, and also the plain fact that I wanted to know how those supermoms actually did it. ( Yes, I am nosey. Just like Napoleon Hill 😛 ).
2) What type of Mummy Businesses will you feature?
We consider ourselves impartial. This means that we will feature successful mumpreneurs in all industries, whether they are making a killing selling tangible objects like baby quilts, making it big selling digital products, kindle books, creating a successful mommy blog, pitching their technology start ups to Venture Capitalists, or even running the VCs themselves. These talented ladies will be featured in the Featured Mumpreneur section.
BIG FAT DISCLAIMER: We are very very interested in internet based set ups, so forgive us if we tend to feature more of those compared to brick and mortar stores.
3) Will you ONLY be featuring mothers/ Mumpreneurs?
This was a struggle for us to decide. Limiting the pool to only mumpreneurs leaves out a big group of talented people.
That is why we created a separate section to feature experts on various topics. The ‘Ask The Experts’ page ensures that all of us will still get useful information from the non-mothers out there!
*Snort* We recommend you read this response to a chauvinistic comment made on a UK Small Business Directory as well as this article on Huffington Post . We will also soon
We are personally in love with it.
5) I’m skeptical that this is all free content, what are you really selling?
Nothing! Apart from building a community of strong independent women, this website is meant to be a FREE informative source for everyone out there.
HOWEVER, some of the mothers in our primary audience have also suggested that we should run digital courses teaching mothers how to set up and run an online business, so we might decide to do that somewhere down the road. Whether this is free or paid remains to be seen. Only when a particular product takes up a substantial amount of time commitment to ensure the highest quality, will we start charging. It is strictly an OPTIONAL process and we promise we won’t badger you.
Another disclaimer: Throughout this process, we will be introducing several digital products that have been useful to our online business. Most of these items would be listed in the resources page, and might contain affiliate links. If you feel that it is a helpful tool FOR YOU, you can CHOOSE to purchase them through our links. If not, feel free to open a separate browser to get them directly from the website.
6) I am suspicious of internet marketing and all these schemes that make it sound so easy to make money online.
Oh darling, we’ve been there. In fact its because of scams like those that we want to provide you with quality information at no charge. No more wasting time in a room full of ‘salespeople’ pressuring you. This is not a multi-level marketing (MLM) business and although some sell reputable products, the others just peddle overpriced items not useful to us at all.
Don’t be quick to discount online businesses as a scam. There are always bad apples, but you need to weed out the golden ones to be successful. If you are still skeptical, we encourage you to visit Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income Page right now to see hundreds of examples of people who have made a killing online. (No affiliation of course, he and his wife April is just our source of inspiration!)
7) I am looking for business ideas to start one online. How can you help?
You’ve come to the right place. Apart from getting inspired by successful mothers and their businesses, we’ve prepared a business planner and guide for you to start brainstorming.
Most successful businesses were started by mothers who noticed a gap in the market and responded to that need. But it’s not just about the potential for profits. Passion for the business played an important part as well.
In the guide, we’ll lead you through all this, including filling up a financial plan to ensure that you consider your family’s needs and finances as well. Download the business plan by clicking on the picture below.
8) How are the experts selected?
Experts are selected based on how knowledgable and successful they are about a particular topic.
You will also occasionally see mothers featured in both the Experts page as well as the Featured Mumpreneurs page. We will ensure that the content would not be duplicated, instead, these are ladies who have run a successful business, but are also qualified to give an expert’s perspective in another field.
If you know of anyone who you would like us to feature as an expert, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
9) How do I get featured in the Mumpreneurs category?
We’re honoured that you would like to be featured! Please email us at email@example.com with a description of your business. We thank you for your contribution and request that you be patient while we go through the awesome list of ladies who have emailed us before you.
10) Why do you keep saying we instead of I?
Our, erm, my bad. Nope, I do not have a multiple personality disorder.
I prefer to look at this website as a joint effort (for example, the daughter taking an extra long nap means I can work on an indepth article).
I will try my best to speak in the first person but if i forget, just imagine I have multiple personas. (Hey if Beyonce can have Sasha Fierce….)
11) Mum, Mom, Mummy or Mommy?
One is the US spelling, the other, the UK/British spelling. Po-ta-to, Poh-tah-to. Its all the same , dah-ling.
